There is no magic formula for determining your home’s optimal Big Screen TV size. Before you commit to a purchase, several factors must be considered.
How big of a section of your living room is designated for the flat-screen TV? Is there enough space for a fan and Dolby Surround Sound speakers to be placed around the TV? What is your budget for this? To what extent will the audience be separated?
You should also consider whether or not a home theater setup would be feasible. Would you be able to free up more room if you hung your TV on the wall instead of using a stand? Is a high-end or budget-friendly Big Screen TV more your style? How envious will your neighbors be, anyway?
o Take the dimensions of the wall or wall mount where the TV will go. Take a foot from that number to account for the framework and air ducts. You can use this to get a ballpark estimate of what size Plasma TV you can accommodate in the room (a 50-inch TV needs at least five feet of wall space).
o Huge Display All televisions use a diagonal measurement system for their screens. While numerous screens range in size from 32 to 108 inches, the most common ones are 42 and 50 inches. A 50-inch screen’s horizontal measurement will be less than 50 inches because TVs are measured diagonally.
o Should you hang your Plasma TV low or high on the wall? A flat wall mount needs to be hung at just the right height. A sitting adult’s eye level should be no more than one foot above the bottom of the screen. A tilt mount allows for mounting on ceilings much higher than that, such as above fireplaces or in bedrooms.
If you hunt around, brand-name 42-inch and 50-inch HDTV Flat Screens can be found for roughly $1,000 and $2,000, respectively. While you can certainly spend much more, the cost of plasma, LCD, and DLP televisions has steadily declined over the past few months.

A television mounted on the wall can save up a lot of floor space. While a flat wall mount will add around 2 inches to the depth of a flat-screen TV, a tilt mount will add about 4 to 6 inches. There should be about 10 inches of room available for a TV stand.
o The height of table bases differs depending on the design and manufacturer. Consider a table or base that is at least 12 inches in depth and 6 inches wider than the base of the table.
o How many square feet of viewing area does this room have? Smaller Big Screen TVs typically require a viewing distance of 6–10 feet, whereas most giant plasmas often require a viewing distance of 6–20 feet.
Consider where you’ll put your Big Screen TV’s stand (or wall mount), speakers, digital cable box, and high-definition digital versatile disc player.
I want to know how envious your neighbors will be of your new 50-inch Plasma.
Which size of flat-screen television is right for your household is a decision only you can make. You’ll be much more satisfied with your new Big Screen TV if you put in the time and effort to plan for and consider your options properly.
